beautiful voice May 18, 2009 Lin (Cleveland OH) I bought this CD because I love her voice. I heard it first on a Miss Saigon soundtrack, and it gave me chills. I was thrilled to find a CD by her, and bought it without looking any deeper. The songs "feel" like covers of oldies-but-goodies. I know I recognized one from the Carpenters. She does them beautifully, but none of them give me chills. None of them has the poignancy or immediacy of emotion of the tragic passages from the play. They are just songs. In all, I'd buy it again, because she does have a beautiful voice, and it makes soothing background for when I'm working. Plus, a voice like hers deserves to be supported. I want her to keep singing, so someday I can get chills again...
Music at it's finest May 9, 2009 Takezo Kensei (Palmdale, CA, USA) Lea Salonga is, simply put, amazing. Of course, any of her long-time fans could tell you that much. And it doesn't take long for any new fans to figure that out. I was one of those little girls who grew up around Disney. So naturally, I had heard Lea's voice long before I ever new her name from hearing her in Aladdin, and later on, in Mulan. A few years back, I heard some songs from Miss Saigon, and it was then that I learned her name. I've listened to those few songs from Disney movies and from musicals on and off through the years until I recently discovered she had recorded albums. Eager to hear more of Ms. Salonga, I bought Inspired and fell in love with it.
Who Are You: 5/5
[I really like this song. I mean, "Who are you, and what have you done with my heart?" Who CAN'T relate to that? More importantly, Lea sings it beautifully)
To Hear You Say You Love Me: 5/5
[Again, beautifully sung, and quite relatable]
Two Words: 5/5
[All the more beautiful because these were her wedding vows. Simply beautiful]
Sing: 4/5
[A lovely song, nothing wrong with it, it's just a bit too jazzy for my taste]
Waiting For Love: 5/5
[Another song that is absolutely lovely. Personal favourite line in the song: "Cause I'm afraid of being close, where I need to be the most..." Again, very relateable]
My Foolish Heart: 4.5/5
[This one is a bit jazzy as well, but once I got used to it, I found that it was just as beautiful as all the previous tracks]
Do You Hear It: 5/5
[I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but all I can seem to say is: Beautiful, lovely]
Brian's Song: 4.5/5
[Another great song, there's just something in the instrumental, though, that keeps me from giving it a 5/5]
When Winter's Gone: 4.5/5
[A good song, just takes some getting used to]
When October Goes: 3/5
[Nothing wrong with this one, again, I'm just not that into anything that resembles jazz (with the exception of Frank Sinatra, but that's another issue entirely)]
Land of the Loving: 5/5
[I absolutely love this song. Pardon me for the comparison, I hate people who compare artists, but I'm breaking my own rule to say that when Lea sings the line, "Magic is made, though the world seems unchanged" the way she sings it resembles some of the lyrics sung by Idina Menzel. There, I said it, I apologize. Anyway, a beautiful song]
Promise Me: 5/5
[My personal favourite off of the album. Just the way she sings it gives me chills. Her voice is stunning and endlessly lovely]
I give the album an overall 5/5 and I HIGHLY recommend it. If you're anything like me, you won't be disappointed!
Beautiful! January 9, 2009 F. Callanta (USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Here's my take on "Inspired." I love the fact that Lea is famous for her beautiful renditions of songs that have been rearranged to suit her style. A great example is her "When October Goes" (from her Stage L.A. concert tribute to Mercer) which is a complete departure from the original Barry Manilow version. I guess the audience wasn't expecting such soft melodius and emotional rendition that she received the biggest ovation among other Broadway veteran performers at that concert. Since then, I have been hoping for a new album with that song but arranged by her brother, Gerard Salonga be released. Finally, "Inspired" was released. A perfect parting gift to her fans before she took the reign of the doomed Fantine in Les Miserables on Broadway in 2006. Not the expected Broadway selection but this time, a tribute to popular classic and jazz songs.
Let me start with "Two Words" (did you know this was her actual wedding vow?). The introduction is new as compared to the last official recording and live performances. The sweeping orchestral movement was beautiful. It's mesmerizing and one can only admire the genius of Gerard Salonga who is indeed a master of his craft. This artiste deserves an award for the entire album or the least for this song. Lea's version of Beverley Craven's "Promise Me" is personally, a better arrangement and vocal style. It's also refreshing to hear Sergio Mendez' s classic "Waiting for Love". Reminiscent of smokey jazz bars from the 50's, I thought Lea did a splendid job in "Who Are You?" and "Foolish Heart." "Do You Hear It" is something I would like to listen to when I just want to relax. Now, straight from the 80's, I didn't know that the melody from the tv movie Brian's Song had lyrics. It's a nice retrospective of that era with a nice pop touch to it. "When Winter's Gone" is a refreshing epilogue to a more emotional "When October Goes." This version of October has a jazzier upbeat as compared to her very emotional Mercer song yet Gerard still managed to keep the beautiful signature "Falling Leaves" melody intact. Overall, this is her best non-Broadway album to date. It is a beautiful timeless recording that I can listen to over and over again. I highly recommend it to everyone.
PS. This album was "repackaged" in 2007 with 2 new additional songs "If You're Not Here" and "Of All The Things". Well worth the second purchase just for the 2 new songs.
Excellence! December 21, 2008 Antonio C. Nolan (Houston,TX, USA) This is a compilation of Lea Salonga's favorite songs to sing. All great renditions. I love the way she sings Two Words which is a wedding-appropriate song. She sang it to her would-be husband during their wedding ceremony. What a gift Lea is to everyone who has heard and love her music.
soothing and soaring October 22, 2008 artmamamd (Menifee, CA) nice compilation of songs to listen to especially while driving..."do you hear it?" would always be soothing, inspiring and soaring no matter how often i listen to this song..."two words" very romantic...THIS is one of my favorite cds!
